ESSENTIAL QUESTION: What is the difference between the vegetarian styles?




Opening Warm-up AND/OR Activator (highlight one): Bellwork: Understanding the Vegetarian Way. Students will describe their last three meals. They will look at the different types of vegetarian eating styles described in the chapter, they will identify which of these styles each dish would fit into if any. Class will discuss their findings and give ideas for how they could alter their meals to fit them into a vegetarian eating plan.

Work Session: 1. Whole group cloze reading and discussion: Vegetarian Diet May Cut Heart Diease Risk.
 2.Students will work on Challenges/Solutions Graphic Organizer with the textbook and Additional Activity worksheet p. 53 Who’s Eating What? and p.54 Vegetarian Nutrient Solutions [p. 21-22, 55, 92].




Closing/Summarizer: If your doctor advised you to choose a vegetarian diet based on some health concerns which one would you choose and why?

Opening Warm-up AND/OR Activator (highlight one): Eating Disorder p. 52. Students will read the prompt and complete the student activity.


Work Session:  Students will watch DVD: Understanding Anorexia and Bulimia
1.       This video gives an excellent overview and several firsthand accounts of eating disorders. It discusses  the reasons behind the disorders, how they are treated and the damage they can do to the body. 

    2.PowerPoint Slide 16
         The activity on this slide should be completed after viewing Understanding Anorexia & Bulimia. Students will be able to answer the questions more thoroughly with information the video provides.
         The questions students will need to answer are listed below:
o    In paragraph form, write the answers to the following:
§  What are the outcomes of the following disorders?
§  Anorexia
§  Bulimia
§  Binge Eating
o    Who is at risk for the following disorders?
§  Anorexia
§  Bulimia
§  Binge Eating
         After students answer the questions, have students discuss their answers with partners. Then, discuss answers as a class.
          
3. Independent Reading: Choices Article-Driven to be Thin. Students will complete Magazine Report Form ( purpose, summary, opinion)
4. Students will work on Worksheet Activity 2A [T/F] and Activity 7A Word Jumble
