ESSENTIAL QUESTION: Which items are important to notice
when looking at packaged food labels?
Standards: HUM-FNW-4.
Evalulate nutritional information in relation to wellness for individuals and
families.
Opening Warm-up AND/OR Activator (highlight
one): List two things that must be on a nutrition facts panel.
Work Session: LESSON 1: How to Read a
Food Label
1.Give students the Nutrition Facts
Pre-test.

Allow them to check their papers and
go over the answers with them.
2. Show and discuss the What’s
On a Food Label? PowerPoint. Give the students a copy of What’s on a Food Label? Study Guide
and have them take notes on the PowerPoint.
3. Have students do the activity Check
Out This Label! Worksheet and answer questions using the label
provided.
4. Show a short video clip on how to read a food label (there is a
good one on Oprah’s website). After the video, have a class discussion about
it.
5.-Discuss Wednesday food lab

Work Session:
Mini Lab- Chicken and Ramon Stir Fry: (50 Minutes) Complete Lab Planning Sheet
Turn the rest of class time over to
students to work in the lab. Give lab directions and get them to work. Walk
around to answer questions and keep an eye on lab behavior. Check the students
clean up of lab and make sure everything has been properly completed.
Students prep, cook, eat, and clean.
Make sure students have cleaned up
their personal work spaces. Check the kitchens for
cleanliness
