Dear South Cobb Community,
On August 21, 2017, all of North America will be
treated to an eclipse of the sun. This means that Earth, the sun, and the moon—
which all orbit in space in predictable paths— will align. The moon will move
between the sun and Earth, blocking the light of the sun. Thus, the moon will
cast a shadow on Earth. Here in Cobb, we will experience a near-total eclipse
between 2:35 and 2:40 p.m. that will last approximately two minutes. This
alignment of the sun, the moon, and Earth will mark the first time this phenomenon
has occurred coast-to-coast in our country in nearly 100 years.
Many of you may be planning to observe the
eclipse as a family. If your student will be checking out early on
Monday, August, 21st, we would greatly appreciate you sending in a note by
Friday, August 18th, so we may verify the note ahead of time.
If you are planning on checking your student out please do so before 1:30. This
will make the checkout process run more efficiently on the 21st.
Our daily bell schedule for South Cobb High
School will be adjusted to allow all classes/students that wish to participate
the opportunity to do so, with parent permission and appropriate safety
glasses. It will also take in to account the extension of the school day by 45
minutes. The adjusted bell schedule for South Cobb High School is listed
below.
All high school students across the CCSD will
have a delayed dismissal process on Monday, August 21, 2017. Students
will be dismissed once all the buses have arrived (approximately 4:15
PM). Please plan on adding a minimum of 45 minutes for your child to
return home on Monday, August 21, 2017.
All after-school practice times will be adjusted
according to the 45-minute delay in dismissal.
Students wishing to participate in viewing the
solar eclipse outdoors must have appropriate glasses and must have a signed
parent permission form. (Form attached below) Student permission
forms were sent home Friday, August 11, 2017. Students must return signed
permission slips by this Friday, August 18, 2017, during their homeroom.
The school must have a signed permission form for any student who will be outside
during peak hours of the eclipse (2:00-3:00pm) All safety and security
guidelines will be followed as recommended and outlined by NASA in the attached
document and at: https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/safety
Any student who does not have a signed
permission and the appropriate glasses may not be outside from 2:00 to 3:00 PM.
Teachers are responsible for planning standard
based and relevant instructional activities related to the event.
TECHNOLOGY:
GREAT NEWS! There will be a one hour live
broadcast via IPTV from Kennesaw Mountain High School showcasing the
observatory/eclipse from 1:45 - 2:45 PM.
NASA has curated a strong collection of
informational resources on the eclipse. We recommend accessing this site
for eclipse questions you may have regarding safety, timing, resources and
